The RIESTER Foundation acts both locally and globally to help protect our environment and its species. Today we received exciting news from Costa Rica about a project expansion. For the second year, the Foundation is funding a project to save sea turtles on Corozalito Beach (the closest beach to the RIESTER Reserve). Last year, RIESTER Foundation funded a pilot project to determine how to protect the diminishing sea turtle population by focusing on their nesting environment. Through the pilot study, the Foundation discovered that thousands of turtles lay eggs on the beach each season. However, certain circumstances were deteriorating the success rate of the eggs hatching.
This year, RIESTER Foundation is funding efforts to do a more extensive study on the hatching success rate and to protect the eggs from poachers - both animal and human. Field coordinators and volunteers will have a presence on the beach for six months to protect Olive Ridley Sea Turtles and Leatherback eggs. Please stay tuned for more progress on this incredible project.
